“Open source” refers to software that is publicly available which lets anyone use, study, modify, and redistribute its source code for free, and which is developed and maintained by a group of volunteers, non-profit organizations, or companies. Since the 1990s, open source software has become central to all modern software, with the vast majority of digital and internet infrastructure running GNU Linux (an open source operating system), and all major commercial and non-commercial software products relying upon open source code bases for their systems.
